Apr 2023 Scott Udle

“My Approach to a Shot”

Bio:  Scott’s photo of a Newfoundland pony won him his first photography competition, and appeared on the cover of Downhome Magazine’s 2019 calendar. The picture emulates some of his favourite things to photograph: landscapes, Newfoundland heritage, and interesting lighting. In the late 90s, Scott and his wife moved from Newfoundland to Ontario. After welcoming their daughter in 2001, Scott bought his first DSLR and discovered an interest in photography. While he experiments with numerous techniques like macro and still life, he grew a particular affection for landscapes and long exposures. After years of finding inspiration in Newfoundland’s rugged and historical landscape, one of Scott’s proudest moments was being the Featured Photographer in Downhome Magazine’s May 2021 issue. Scott is always striving to learn and improve his techniques, and has enjoyed his previous role as Competitions Director for CPOPC for two years.

Presentation:  Scott’s presentation will be about how he has approached his development as a photographer, how he plans his images and how he determines composition of his images.

Scott’s images can be found on to Instagram (@2jillsphotography) and sometimes on 500px (500px.com/tuckamore47)

Oct 2022 Robert Scott

“Abandoned Photography: A safe guide for rural exploration”

Bio:  Robert Scott is a photographer based in Calgary, Alberta. He fell into photography by accident when caught in a thunderstorm riding his motorcycle on a secondary highway. He sought shelter in an abandoned building and while waiting for the storm to pass, he snapped a few pictures with his point and shoot camera. Since then, Robert has explored the backroads of Alberta and Saskatchewan relentlessly in search of historic relics to photograph.

Presentation:  With the growing popularity of abandoned photography across all social media platforms, people are venturing out of the city by the droves to hunt for these wooden relics to secure their own trophy shots. As a long time backroad hunter myself, I understand the lure of these historic structures and the magical images they can produce. However, the quest to conquer abandoned houses indeed has consequences. This presentation will shed light on the ethics and safety of abandoned photography while giving you a ‘shotgun’ seat through some of the most picturesque landscapes in Alberta.
